MY FIRST ULTRAMARATHON… MARATHON DES SABLES

MY FIRST ULTRAMARATHON… MARATHON DES SABLES   Yes, you read that right. My first ever ultramarathon was the Marathon des Sables in 2000. That was 23 years ago!!! MDS is known as one of the toughest, if not the toughest, ultramarathons in the world. So how did I happen to...

My Solo Sahara Odyssey

Sahara Odyssey is a 64-day, 1,360-kilometer trek across the Moroccan Sahara. I will make the journey on foot, accompanied by camels, an experienced guide, and a small local support team, with periodic resupply by vehicle.

The trek will begin at the end of October and finish at the end of December 2027.

When completed, Sahara Odyssey will be the longest documented desert trek undertaken by a Canadian woman.

The Sahara is one of the most demanding and unforgiving environments on Earth. Vast distances, isolation, relentless terrain, powerful winds, sandstorms, cold nights, and complete exposure to the elements create a sustained test of physical and mental endurance.

I will carry about 30 pounds of my own gear, including shelter, clothing, medical and emergency equipment, and personal necessities. Six camels will carry the expedition’s food, water, and camp equipment. An experienced guide, camel drivers, and a camp cook will accompany the expedition and care for the camels throughout the journey.

Physical endurance is only one part of the challenge. The greater test may be mental resilience.

Modern life surrounds us with constant communication, information, distraction, and validation. In the desert, much of that disappears. Day after day, there is only the landscape, the journey, and the decision to keep moving forward.

For more than 30 years, endurance sports has taken me into some of the world’s most difficult environments. To date, I have raced 3,930 kilometers through deserts around the world, including nine Marathon des Sables.

Sahara Odyssey is the next chapter.

At 65, I want to explore what is still possible, not by ignoring age, but by refusing to allow it to define the boundaries of ambition, curiosity, and adventure.

64 days. 1,360 kilometers. On foot across the Moroccan Sahara.
